Fun holiday weekend at West Jeff Ox Roast

Despite the wet weather, West Jefferson citizens came out to support the 67th annual Ox Roast with its parade on Saturday. The event, which kicked off the three-day festival, was sponsored by the West Jefferson Community Association which began in 1951.

The parade started just after noon and ran down Main Street. The day’s announcer was festival president, Jeff Pfeil, who enticed the parade viewers with the more than 50 arts and crafts spots, over 20 food vendors and a number of eating contests at the roast.

“New this year is a pie eating contest,” Pfeil said. “Why a pie eating contest, too? Well, we just like to eat.”

Among the floats and features were Mayor Ray Martin, the Ox Roast Festival royalty, the Roughriders football players fresh off a 45-0 victory on Friday and the West Jeff and London marching bands.

Evelyn Clark, president of the auxiliary at the West Jefferson VFW, shared the sentiments of many onlookers.

“You just never know. Sometimes it’s so hot you can’t stand it and now it’s cold,” she said. Her plans were to attend the roast, but she also had to prepare for the VFW’s monthly drawing later that evening. Although the rain drizzled throughout, the parade garnered cheers and applause.

There were a number of events and games Sunday and Monday, as well.

The kiddie tractor pull was held Sunday along with the hot dog eating contest.

The highlights Monday included the Ox bicycle tour, the Ox 5K run, the Oxy Baby, Oxy Tots and Oxy Sweethearts contests, the ice cream eating contest and Ox Roast Talent Show Finals.
