MCBDD job club hosts first coat drive

As temperatures across the county drop, members of the Madison County Board of DD Job Club are working to make sure residents stay warm.

Brandon North, club secretary, organized the first “Coats & Coffee” coat drive. The drive took place at London Coffee Peddler, which offered special late hours just to house the event.

A total of 87 coats were donated throughout November and December.

As of Monday night, only about 25 remained. Those left were donated to the H.E.L.P. House.

Jenn Coleman, club advisor and Community Inclusion Manager for Madison County Board of DD, explained that while she helps implement programs, the ideas come entirely from the club members.

North said that helping others makes him “feel like a hero.”

While the winter coat drive is over, the job club works year round to help others.

In January, they will be building free-standing loaner libraries that will be erected at several places throughout the community, according to Coleman.

In the spring, the club maintains the green space at Triangle Park by gardening and mulching.

“I want to make London a beautiful place,” North said.
