The dig out from Friday’s snow storm that dumped up to 14 inches in Madison County continued on Sunday, aided by clear skies, diminished winds, and lots of sunshine.

“Our city crews have many thoroughfares open,” said London Police Chief Dave Wiseman. “People are getting around.”

“The major state routes and county routes are pretty clear,” said Madison County Sheriff Jim Sabin, who had downgraded the emergency snow level to Level 1 from Level 2 at 5 a.m. on Sunday. “The sun has been a savior for us.”

However, Chief Wiseman and Sheriff Sabin cautioned motorists about taking anything for granted on the highway.

“With Level 1, you should go out only if you have to,” said Wiseman. “You have to use good judgement.”

“You have to remember that there are icy spots out there,” said Sabin. “They can sneak up on you. The hard pack on the roadways makes it so dangerous. A dry stretch can change into ice or a rough sheet of ice without warning.”

He added that while major thoroughfares in the county are clear, county roads remained ice covered.
