Staff report

Representatives of the Open Gate Garden Club recently attended the two-day Ohio Association of Garden Clubs (OAGC) Exhibitors and Judges School No. 6, at Deer Creek Park Lodge.

Members Chieko Arikawa, Becky Bushong, Joy Culler, Barbara Myers and Judy Wessel attended the event on Sept. 19 and Sept. 20.

This school offers a comprehensive program in both horticulture and floral design to assist attendees in becoming better exhibitors and/or to become an Ohio Association of Garden Clubs accredited flower show judge.

The series consists of six two-day schools which are held over a two-year period. The OAGC Exhibitors and Judges handbook is used as a textbook for these courses, along with additional material assigned by instructors. Teaching is done by accredited judges or others who have a broad knowledge of their subject.

School No. 6 covered several creative floral designs and winter and holiday flower shows. In horticulture, Chrysanthemums, fruits, vegetables and herbs, orchids and Bromeliads were covered. Sessions were also included on dish and fairy gardens and plant ID. Optional sessions were on judging of designs and horticulture topics.

Open Gate Garden Club member Chieko Arikawa, an OAGC Master Judge taught the Ikenobo School in a design study workshop on Monday evening.
