Consider the colors of winter

What would you say the colors would be: brown, ochre, gray, white? How would you describe a winter’s day? Would you try to say what that particular day would be or would you refer in your mind to winters past? I’m not real crazy about the gray days of winter but we haven’t had very [...]

You can control some changes

Some changes you have control of but many you do not. The trouble is often you do not know which is which. I love painting and creating other forms of art, because for the most part, I have control over the outcome. When you’re dealing with people, the variables multiply significantly. You do things in [...]

How bright is the light from one little candle?

I guess it all depends on where you have it. I am writing this article from the light of a single candle. It helps me think and focus on what I am doing and why I am doing it. I am a romantic at heart, which should come not as a surprise to anyone who [...]

I am moving out of my studio

My studio is presently in the area between the house and the garage and uses electric baseboard heat but it takes a lot of electric energy to keep it in a tolerable range. I’m moving what I am working on into the house where it is heated anyway. Besides that, the light is better in [...]

Exactly what does “it’s a new year” mean? Well, for one thing, the old year is over and what is past is past. This new year is full of opportunities and they are ahead of us. I’m not going to look backward, I am looking forward to each new day. I will be painting more [...]

Between the holidays I am very introspective

I look at the year ending and the one about to begin. I look at missed opportunities and opportunities that I had no say in because I chose not to. This past year has not been a particularly productive year in the number of paintings I produced but I feel the few that I did [...]

The original Christmas was based on freedom

It is true that this calendar time was a pagan holiday time. During this time of celebration, the Romans would set their slaves free for this period of festivities. The slaves, many who were also Christian, decided that they would take this time of freedom and celebrate Christ’s birth. That is the main reason that our Christmas and the pagan holiday coincide with each other.
