The work of fashion design senior Maggie Tanner, from West Jefferson, will be featured in the Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) Senior Fashion Show on May 9 in Columbus.
Seventy designs by 22 CCAD senior fashion design students were selected by a jury of fashion industry executives to be shown on the runway for the annual Columbus event.
Columbus has become an emerging fashion hub in recent years, and fashion scouts from Lane Bryant, Express, Abercrombie & Fitch, Tween Brands and Victoria’s Secret usually scout the CCAD seniors in the show.
Maggie Tanner, a 2009 graduate from West Jefferson High School, hopes her exposure in the fashion show leads to bigger things beyond graduation.
While the focus of her interest leans toward women’s fashion, Tanner’s short-term career goals are more general. “I want to work somewhere and make money,” she said. “I’d like to stay in Ohio if I can.”
Tanner continues to live in West Jefferson, and commutes to college.
In the show, Tanner will show a collection of three designs, all following a theme.
“My designs are inspired by abandoned buildings; when plants begin to grow on them, when plaster chips away, and that sort of stuff,” Tanner said.
Tanner enjoys working with denim and knitwear, which is evidenced in her collection. Of the 22 designers in the fashion show, Tanner is the only one to include denim jeans in her collection.
Her collection includes hand-painted graphics, hand-dyed effects, raw edges, and a lot of distressing to achieve a worn, tattered look.
But not too tattered, mind you.
“I didn’t want to do too much distressing to the point where it wasn’t practical. I like the idea of something that someone can actually wear,” Tanner said.
The CCAD Senior Fashion Show is expected to net about $200,000 for CCAD’s general scholarship fund. The event begins with a VIP reception, followed by the runway show and a dance party at CCAD’s Design Studios, 390 E. Broad St., Columbus.
Tickets for the event are available online at ccad.edu/events-2014/sfs-2014.
