Both London and Jonathan Alder had a total of six wrestlers place in the top four at the tough D-II sectional at Madison-Plains on Saturday, Feb. 15, qualifying all of them to this weekend’s district tournament.
The Pioneers had two wrestlers earn championships, while another lost a heartbreaking final match.
Eli Ayoub won the crown at 126 pounds pinning Austin Shannon of Amanda-Clearcreek in 1:56 in the championship final. Bret Yutzy was also victorious in the 132 final, edging London’s Garrett Blackburn 1-0.
In the 220-pound championship Dustin Baker stopped Alder’s Troy Caldwell 5-4. In the final at 160 pounds London’s Own Shoemaker put Amanda-Clearcreek’s Caleb Horn on his back in 5:13. At 145 pounds Lucas McClaskie placed second to Efren Silva of River Valley.
Other Madison County district qualifiers from the D-II tournament at Madison-Plains were London’s Colten Winters who was third at 152, and the Red Raiders’ trio of Charlie Solorzano (fourth, 106), Jose Velasco (fourth, 113) and Nathan Nagel (126, fourth).
The Pioneers’ Derek Ridder was third at 285, while Zach Wright placed fourth at 195 pounds after coming up short in the consolation final against Daniel Lee of Bexley.
West Jefferson scored 122.5 points and placed fifth, while the 91.5 points scored by Madison-Plains earned it the ninth spot in the D-III sectional at Cardington-Lincoln on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15.
The sectional championship was earned by Bishop Hartley (190.5), Northmor was second with 177 points.
Five Roughriders earned trips to the D-II district tournament, led by a pair of sectional champions in freshman David Staten (106) and senior Louis Wemyss (182).
Junior Cody Dingess was second at 152, as was senior Ricky Ratcliff at 145. The other West Jeff wrestler moving on will be freshman Josh Doherty at 160.
For Madison-Plains, three wrestlers made their way through the bracket and will be wrestling this upcoming weekend at the district. Jake Datz placed second at 170 as did Robert Miller at 182. Lee Griffin earned his ticket to the district by placing fourth at 195.
The D-II district championship will be held at Claymont High School, while the D-III district will be at Heath. Both tournaments will take place Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22. The top four placers in each weight class will advance to the state championship tournament at Ohio State University from Thursday, Feb. 27 through Saturday, March 1.
