Three people were arrested Monday following the execution of a search warrant and a vehicle stop, both connected with an investigation into heroin distribution in Highland County, according to information released Tuesday by Highland County Sheriff Richard Warner.

Monday evening, a search warrant was served in the 100 block of Willow Street in Hillsboro and a vehicle stop was made on SR 73 near Harry Sauner Road. Both are linked to an ongoing investigation into the distribution of heroin in the county, Warner said.

The investigation has been going on for several months, Warner said, adding, “This is one of those cases where individuals are bringing drugs into the county from other counties.”

Three people were arrested on outstanding warrants from Clinton County. Those arrested were John Layne, 30, of Hillsboro; Anthony Woody III, 34, of Wilmington; and Crystal Batson, 25, of Wilmington.

Heroin, drug paraphernalia and cash were confiscated, according to the release.

Warner said all three were turned over to Clinton County following the arrests.

The case will be presented to Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins. Charges are pending lab tests and presentation to a grand jury.
