Red Cross seeks heroes

Most likely when you think of the American Red Cross, your first thoughts are about blood drives or disaster responses.

Local American Red Cross of Madison County officials say the organization is so much more. In fact, the local chapter currently is making plans for its annual Hometown Heroes event, which recognizes people in the community who have excelled in many areas.

Nominations are being sought in five categories: Education, Public Safety, Health Care, Work Place and Youth.

“The event honors the unsung heroes in our community,” said Mike Boerger, president of the local chapter’s board of directors. “This is a chance for us to recognize the work they do — the work which oftentimes goes noticed but not honored.”

Dave Sharp is serving as the interim director of the local chapter.

He pointed out that the Hometown Heroes event is the chapter’s largest fundraiser of the year. It enables local volunteers to carry out their good works.

“It’s another way for the community to come together in a positive way and be engaged in honoring those who have served this community.”
