100 Years ago in West Jefferson

March 21, 1913

Madison County Democrat — The annual thank offering of the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society was held at the M.E. Church Sunday evening.

— The Ladies’ Aid Society of the M.E. Church will hold their Easter market at the town hall Saturday evening.

— The ladies of the K.G.E. at Plumwood will have an Easter bazaar at the Plumwood hall on Saturday evening, March 22. They will have some entertainments and a fish pond. They will sell dust caps, aprons, chair cushions, etc. They will also serve a 25 cent supper of everything good to eat, also sandwiches, and coffee, pies, cakes, oysters and ice cream. Be sure to go without your supper. (Makes you wish that you could go doesn’t it.)

— Mrs. W. E. Booth will entertain the members of the Missionary Society at her home on Main Street on Wednesday evening.

— A six weeks session of Normal School will be held in London beginning June 16. A through review of the common and higher branches will be given and especial emphasis placed on agriculture. (Do you know what a Normal School was? It is a school created to train high school graduates to be teachers. The purpose is to establish teaching standards or norms, hence its name.)

The Madison Press, Aug. 3, 1953 — F. B. Gibson, 290 W. Main St., West Jefferson, reported Monday morning seeing two large deer crossing the road near the intersection of state Route 29 and U.S. Route 40. (A rarity back then.)

— Miss Minerva Harbage, near West Jefferson, left Sunday for Fort Knox, Ky., to attend an Army Service School of disaster cooking and mass feeding. Miss Harbage is the daughter of Mrs. Arnett Harbage and is a nutrition consultant with the State Department of Health.

— Miss Mary Harbage, daughter of Mrs. Arnett Harbage, arrived home from Korea Wednesday where she had spent the last nine months. She was part of a group who went at the invitation of the Korean Minister of Education to give his country some assistance in setting up an elementary school system. She will return in September to her duties as Director of the Elementary School System in Akron.

— Wednesday evening the West Jefferson Volunteer Firemen will play an All-Star team composed of players from the Senior League starting at 7:30 o’clock at the athletic field.

— Public sale — Household furnishings, tools and other items at the Harry Coe Warehouse in West Jefferson on Saturday, Aug. 8, 1953. Coe and Lamb Auctioneers, Fred Williams, clerk, Lawrence Karns, cashier.
