Thurman Snyder dead at 99

Thurman R. Snyder, former London City Council member, has died at age 99. Snyder, who hailed from Lilly Chapel, served the London community for many years.

In recent years, the city acknowledged his chairmanship of the London Sesquicentennial, which was held in 1961. Snyder returned to London from his home in Gahanna to ride in a silver Lincoln Continental convertible in the London Bicentennial Parade in 2011.

The longtime executive at National City Bank, Snyder served in the London banking community until his retirement in 1977.

While in London, “Thurm,” as he came to be known, held leadership positions. Among them were:

• eight-year city council member

• charter member and past president of the London Jaycees

• past president of the following London organizations: Rotary Club, chamber of commerce, Easter Seals Society, Shrine.

He was a 60-year member of the Chandler Masonic Lodge, Knights Templar and Aladdin Temple Shrine.

Preceded in death by his wife, Ida “Dutch” Snyder, he is survived by a son, John, his wife, Judy and their offspring.

Snyder’s funeral was held Thursday in Gahanna. His final resting place is Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield.
