Mary Agle Flax, 84, of South Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, following a brief illness.

Mary was born Feb. 2, 1928, to Florence (Hodge) and George J. Agle.

Mary graduated from Plattsburg High School in 1945, Ohio Wesleyan University in 1949 where she achieved the honor of Phi Beta Kappa, and University of Iowa with a Masters Degree in dietetics.

In 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Gordon R. Flax.

Mary was a lifelong member of Plattsburg United Church of Christ where she played the organ for over 60 years.

She was a tireless volunteer for many organizations including: Community Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary, Board of CHIEF, WASSO, 4-H advisor, O.S.U. President’s Club, Ohio Buckeye Cowbelles, National Cattle Women, South Charleston Community Club, and Clark County Republican Women.

She took great joy in being a farm wife, hosting gatherings of family and friends, traveling, cooking, and writing poetry. She was widely known in the Clark County and Ohio agricultural communities for her dedication and support.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, G. James Agle and Joseph Agle; sister-in-law, Catherine Agle; brother-in-law, Willard Stickney; and great-granddaughter, Kiley Nicole Flax.

Mary is survived by her husband of 61 years, Gordon R. Flax; four children, G. Richard (Peggy) Flax, Emily (Eugene) Little, Marcia A. Flax, Jay (Jill) Flax; 10 grandchildren,  Gregory (Holly) Flax, Melanie (Chad) Wilt, Cindy (Thomas) Brown, Kevin Flax, Justin (Kim) Flax, Jeremy (Marissa) Flax, Jennifer (Pete) Bollinger, Eric (Maria) Little, Megan Little, and Janet Little; 11 great-grandchildren, Ryan Flax, Andrew Flax, Lauren Flax, Jordan Flax, Lane Flax, Avery Flax, Cade Brown, Camden Brown, CJ Wilt, Addie Wilt, and Ava Bollinger; brother, Dr. John (Carolyn) Agle; sister-in-law, Norma Jean Stickney; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, 830 N. Limestone St., Springfield, as well as one hour prior to the funeral service, which will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, in Plattsburg United Church of Christ. Pastor Curt Miner will be officiating. Burial will be in Plattsburg Cemetery.
