‘Partiers’ trash mini-mart

Madison County Prosecutor Steve Pronai will meet with officials from the University of Dayton this week to discuss possible criminal charges against 80 students who allegedly vandalized a Choctaw Lake mini-mart in a drunken rampage on Saturday, Nov. 17.

Two busloads of University of Dayton students allegedly trashed a local mini-mart.

A sheriff’s report said two busloads of students, both men and women, stopped at Lake Side Plaza, 3180 Old Columbus Road, around

5 p.m., following an outing to Columbus. All were intoxicated. At least 33 were under the legal drinking age. However, the report did not list ages for all 80.

All were associated in some way with Sigma Chi fraternity.

On Wednesday, the university suspended the fraternity, pending results of an investigation by the U.D. Department of Public Safety, published reports said.

Trouble surfaced at 5:25 p.m. Nov. 17 when a Lake Side employee called 9-1-1, saying a large group of people were drunk and fighting in the store. Additional 9-1-1 calls said people were damaging the business and “flashing” their genitals to customers in the parking lot.

Deputy Vaughn Apel arrived at the store to find people running in and out, yelling obscenities and standing on vehicles in the lot and on fuel pumps. Some fled to the waiting buses when they spotted Apel.

Inside, Apel saw broken glass and liquid on the floor. Two men were urinating openly. A check of restrooms showed urine on the floor and walls and used condoms in the sink. Some students were allegedly seen having sex in a nearby dumpster. A large number of open beer cans were left abandoned in the store’s walk-in cooler.

Four men who said they were in charge of the group provided deputies with details of the trip to Columbus and offered to pay the business for damages.

Deputies John Lisska and Jacob Gibson arrived to take photos of the scene and collect information on the 80 riding on the buses. The students were advised of their rights and told charges may be filed.

A university spokesperson said last week behaviors described in the initial report are “unacceptable and in violation of the student code of conduct and will be dealt with swiftly.”

Sheriff Jim Sabin remains puzzled about circumstances that led to the incident. He questioned why those driving the buses and supervising the 80 students passed up larger restroom facilities at the U.S. Route 42 and Interstate 70 intersection for a “potty stop” at small, out-of-the-way Lake Side Plaza.

A rest stop just a few miles farther west on the Clark-Madison county line offered another opportunity for the students to relieve themselves, Sabin noted.

Um…. I WAS in the band (and got laid plenty of times in places better than a dumpster), and there’s no defense for this kind of BS. Go ahead and ban them. There are bigger things to worry about in school than silliness like this. If the punishment doesn’t really piss off those involved they won’t learn a thing.

    Slamming in a dumpster. It’s a TFM.

Sigma Chi never die. In hoc. Steak and carrots.

@UDalum2 and clearly you were a Theta claiming to not want to party with them, when in reality nobody wanted to party with you.

Dub C – Clearly you don’t realize how much of a d-bag your post makes you appear. I completely agree with you UDalum. I am also a UD alumi and couldn’t stand SIgma Chi guys. They thought way too highly of themselves and that just wasn’t how people at UD acted. – they are the opposite of what makes me love UD. My sorority never liked having any parties with them and avoided it as much as possible. There are some great frats at UD and they are giving them all a bad name. They really are an embarrassment to the school. The ban should be permanent.

80 kids, “all were intoxicated.” That is pretty impressive and says a lot about that fraternity’s cohesiveness. Congrats Sigma Chi.

Also, there were “used condoms” in the bathroom sink? How long were the kids allowed to go in the restroom without interuption? If they were all intoxicated, it probably was a long time. At some point the store owner has to take some responsibility for failure to supervise.

Seriously? Two ladies were supposed to take charge of the situation? They did the best thing by calling 911. God forbid we expect young adults to know how to conduct themselves in a public place.

  7. Dub C

@UDalum clearly you were either in the band or an RA and are angry that you never got laid in a dumpster.

  8. Don’t care what school or frat or whatever, execute these worthless piles of filth publicly.

Let me guess, Rowdy, you’re an upstanding member of society from West Jeff? Probably living in your mom’s basement and get on the internet by hijacking your neighbor’s wifi?

  10. Relieve yourself somewhere else

i have to wonder why they say “charges may be filed.” the last time i checked underage drinking is against the law. the students should have been charged on the spot as well as the four people who were supposedly in charge of the group. it sounds like sabin is saying underage drinking and trashing things is acceptable as long as it’s not in our county. this is poor leadership from all parties and shame on those partiers.

    Whip out the shotgun!

Sigma Chi fraternity has NEVER been an asset to the UD student body. This story does not surprise me, given that it was that particular fraternity. They are in no way an accurate representation of UD’s student body and it is too bad that they are dragging the university’s name through the mud. These students owe this business MANY work hours to repay the damages they caused. Hopefully they won’t just charge them (daddy will pay for it), but make them work it off!

had the story not specifically mentioned that it was students from the University of Dayton, I’d have figured it was just normal London white trash behavior.
