The West Jefferson Police Department is currently investigating an armed robbery that occurred early Tuesday, Oct. 16, at a local gas station in town.
Video surveillance cameras show an individual entered the Certified Gas Station, located at 184 E. Main St. in West Jefferson, at 1:38 a.m. approached the clerk at the counter and brandished a black semi-automatic handgun. The subject appeared to be a white male and he demanded cash, Marlboro Red 100s cigarettes and took M&M candy. The subject made a statement to the clerk that he had a wife and kids to feed. The subject then exited the store east on foot, behind the West Jefferson Hardware Store, and walked south to East Main Street (U.S. Route 40). The West Jefferson Police Department is reviewing the surveillance photos from the gas station, along with surveillance camera footage from the hardware store and already have leads in the case.
“We don’t really have a lot to go on,” Chief Terry Ward said. “We had a couple of people call in, but we don’t know much right now. It remains under investigation.”
The subject is believed to be a white male with goatee facial hair. His physical description is height of five feet-six inches to five feet-seven inches and was wearing a black hooded jacket, black jeans and tan boots. Detective Brandon Smith said the department is following leads in the case.
“We are following up on leads,” Smith said Tuesday morning. “One seems pretty promising and the person is coming in to look at our photos. The gas station clerk is also coming in to look at our photos and he is adamant that he will never forget the subject’s voice for the rest of his life. He said he had a very distinctive voice. It is unfolding pretty quickly.”
If anyone believes they have any information in the case, they are asked to call the West Jefferson Police Department at (614) 879-7672.
