The Jonathan Alder boys soccer team hopes to overcome its inexperience with dedication and determination.

The Pioneers graduated a host of talent from last year’s squad, which played in a Division II Central District semifinal match.

Second-year coach David Lanka said his young squad has been working hard in the offseason.

“We are only returning a few varsity players and, overall, we are young,” he said.

“However, the coaching staff is extremely pleased with the strides we have taken in our summer practices and tournaments. We have three pre-season scrimmages scheduled against quality opponents which will gear us up for our tough 2012 season.”

Alder will play a stout schedule in 2012, including games against Big Walnut (8/21), Grandview (8/25), at Fairbanks (9/6), London (TBD), Columbus Academy (9/20), Bexley (9/29), at Centennial (10/9), and at Marysville (10/13).

Defense most likely will carry the Pioneers with Jacob Eye (defense), Justin Byers (keeper) and Kyle Harig (keeper) returning in back. Logan Manning also returns as a forward/midfield.

The Pioneers play host to Big Walnut at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
