Amish goodies for sale at 33rd Shekinah Festival

The 33rd Shekinah Christian School Festival starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7 and continues through Saturday, Sept. 8. It will be held at the school, 10040 Lafayette-Plain City Road, Plain City.

The festival is the school’s main fundraising event, and profits go toward helping keep tuition affordable.

I’ve been buying tickets in hopes of winning a handmade quilt from the Shekinah Festival for years — decades, actually.

At last count there are 11 quilts being auctioned this year.

There are hundreds of people expected over Friday evening and through the day on Saturday, the vast majority of whom will buy at least one ticket.

I’m not holding my breath, but you have to play to win. This year’s quilts are beautiful. Here’s hoping it’s my turn.

The food booths, which are open throughout the festival, feature a large variety of Amish or Amish-style foods.

On Friday there will be booths serving pizza, Taco salad, trail bologna and cheese, pretzels, popcorn, ice cream, funnel cakes, apple dumplings, soft drinks and lots of candy.

Entertainment on Friday starts at 7:30 p.m. and includes a concert featuring Daniel Dye and the Miller Road Band plus the band Andolino.

Hot air balloon rides lift off Saturday morning at sunrise (weather permitting). There will be a breakfast of sausage, pancakes, coffee and doughnuts.

At 8:30 a.m. the specialty booths open, featuring homemade Amish foods of all descriptions. The choices are amazing.

There will be an auction at 10 a.m. Goods to be auctioned may be seen online at www.shekinahchristianschool.com/shekinahfestival.

More events throughout Saturday include a chicken barbecue at 10:30 a.m.; auction of “In Home” meal tickets at noon; and the quilt auction at 1 p.m.

Of particular interest to children are horseback rides and the Kids’ Pedal Pull, offered throughout the day.

Typical of the pies you will find whole and by the piece at the Shekinah Festival is this rich, simple sugar pie. Buy one at the festival or make it at home.

AMISH SUGAR

CREAM PIE

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1/8 teaspoon salt

2 cups half-and-half cream

1/2 cup whipping cream

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/2 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

In a large saucepan combine granulated sugar, salt, half-and-half and whipping cream. Bring to a boil.

In another sauce pan, combine brown sugar and cornstarch. Gradually whisk cream mixture into brown sugar mixture.

Add butter. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, 5 minutes or until thick. Simmer 1 minute, then stir in vanilla.

Pour into uncooked 9 inch pie shell and sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Serves eight.
