    To Janice and Brent
Please don’t let the few who comment on this story color your view of the London community as a whole. Our children were good friends throughout school and graduated together. Our whole family is heartbroken by the loss of your son. He is our hero and we speak of him almost daily. We will never forget him and the ultimate sacrifice he gave us and the USA. I think it is a great idea to have the post office named in his honor. There are all sorts of things named after other individuals with “Veteran’s Memorial” in the name. This doesn’t take anything from the other veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice. I think the opposite is true, this brings awareness to the community that children from our community who were sons, brothers, husbands, and fathers. Rather than the generic “Veterans Memorial” label by itself. Especially for those who’s lives have not been directly impacted by the loss of a loved one in service of their country.

Thank you Jeff and for all the other supporters. I have not and never will let a few color my view. All the people i know around here we consider family. i just want to be clear i was referring to who ever posted this ‘poll’ from the madison press. i believe for him to supply this ‘platform’ is unprofessional, disrespectful(to all), cowardly and quite despicable.

As of May 2012 there were 82 Post Office around the country who had been named in honor of a fallen soldier. There is nothing to preclude the city from having more than one plaque in honor of a fallen soldier.st the Post Office.

I know;I just went through the process with my city. Fortunately, my city was understanding of my desire to have my son memorialized in this way.

Good luck Janice! There are plenty of people who support your efforts!

I cannot believe that the majority are against this!! This boy gave his life for your freedoms! As far as who fell before who – It is up to the families of those fallen soldiers to ask and do the leg work to get it done! Janice is willing to do whatever it takes to keep her son’s memory alive!! I say; “Janice – YOU GO GIRL!! And Good Luck to you in getting this done!! I am proud of you!!”

They have a War memorial down town, his name should and will be added to it. As far as i’m concerned all of the fallen soldiers memory are alive. I didn’t personally know Josh, but I did know some of the others, he should not be put above anybody that has givin thier life.

I think this is a wonderful way to honor fallen soldiers. It is a lasting tribute to their memory, service, and sacrifice to our country. In my opinion, more post offices and other government buildings should be named after our fallen heroes. After all that these heroes and their families gave up, it is the least we can do as citizens of the United States.

  5. Walline

I know of a Post Office in the bronx being named after a Fallen Soldier. I think this is great idea. I think more cities should do this to show how much they care for the HEROES who were willing to give their all for this country.

R….We tried many other things but was shot down….City Council said the bridge on Amherst could be in his honor….I think my son deserves better than a rusty bridge that passes over a drainage ditch. The very prestigious town of New Albany designated a DAY in his honor and he only lived there a short time. People are so quick to judge….has anyone else tried to do anything to honor their loved one? I left family and friends to move back to this town because seeing the procession that rainy, solemn day made me feel so proud of this community. Now I am having second thoughts. Glad to see everyone’s true colors are coming out….I know the one’s who support us and they are all that matters to me. I support all military and will continue to do so….but I will also continue to do everything I can to keep my son’s memory alive and those that truly know the McDaniels family would expect nothing less.

Janice, No one is begrudging you of your son’s memory, he just should not be the sole bearer of having a federal building named after him.
I suggest you go to the northwest corner of main and high st at the courthouse and see how many men and women gave their lives for this country. They all have families also. What if they all petitioned along with you to have that Post office named after their son or daughter?
You have to understand the people of London Love their fallen sons and daughters and do not wish to see one put out in front of another as not one has sacrificed anymore than any of the others and their families have not suffered any less than you have. maybe one day your grief will fade and allow you to think more clearly about how the people of London feel. They are not against you or your son but are for treating all soldiers who died equally in their recognition.

Mike…NO where in my comment did I say any one person was begrudging my son’s memory. He will NOT be the sole bearer…it will say AND VETERANS Memorial Post Office Building. I have NEVER said Josh sacrificed more than any other fallen Marine, Army, Navy, Air Force, Firefighter, Police officer, or any other killed in the line of duty…I said I will do everything in my power to keep my son’s memory alive. Anyone has the right and opportunity to go to their State Rep and ask of these honors for their loved ones…looks like NO one has but me and I am getting bashed and disrespected for doing so? If you want something done you have to work for it. The people of London has a right to their opinion and the freedoms to speak them. My family and I also have that right….Thanks to my son and ALL who gave the ultimate sacrifice…..

      • Janice

Oh and one more thing Mike…I am friends with Robbie’s Mother and speak to her quite often. We have cried together…she even came to my son’s memorial. I know how much Robbie was loved and I will forever honor him and never forget his sacrifice. You might also want to check your dates…Pfc Robert A. Swaney was KIA on July 30, 2005.

I think it’s a great idea. For those of you who disagree, did you ever ASK to have anything named after your lost son, daughter, uncle, dad, mom, etc? If not then you can’t complain. There are roads, statues, bridges, etc all over Ohio named after fallen soldiers, police officers, fire fighters…and I don’t think they are “disrespectful” to others who have lost their lives. If you want a memorial for you loved ones, DO something about it like the McDaniels family has done.

  8. Brittany

Clearly it says “Lance Corporal Joshua B. McDaniels and VETERANS MEMORIAL Post Office Building.”

    Ignorant people.

    • brent

this is clearly the most unprofessional, disrespectful and dishonorable post that any “news paper” has ever printed. #shame on you madison press for your disrespect and cowardness

    • R

again, so sad to see these comments coming for this family, that I saw so many people supporting…..

      why the harsh words?

We are all about supporting your family. We know you are in pain, but know that it is not fair to act this way.

      • brent

r, the ingrate, disrespectful and cowardly that I was referring to and stand by is the madison press employee that posted this in the first place. it is the most unprofessional act that I have ever seen a “news paper post.

    • Gary

But should clearly say MADISON COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL POST OFFICE!!!
In honor of ALL that have served!!!!

  9. jim

So sad that one cannot let a building be named for someone that paid the ultimate sacrifice for you. Do they not have roads named for people, bridges, and other buildings???? If you would like to have someone else honored, plead your case clearly and persistently and then enjoy the outcome.

  10. J

Madison County has lot many men who were defending our country. To single out a very visible entity such as the post office and name it after just one is not the right thing to do. We should continue to look for ways to honor and recognize Josh and all servicemen who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

  11. Betsy

No offense to the family, but no, I don’t think it should. I’m sorry you put forth so much effort and trouble only to have that happen, but stop and consider the other soldiers killed from around this area. They ONLY have the memorial at the courthouse and that’s it. Their names aren’t on anything else here in London. Okay yes I’m sorry he died in the war, but to me this is just kind of snubbing off all the others as if saying “sorry he’s more special than you”. If you’re going to do something like this, don’t make it about one single soldier, make it about for ALL the soldiers from London who have served.

  12. brent

glad ingrates have no say in it. this has nothing to do with London politics. London politics did nothing to honor my Son. he lived in New Albany only a short time and they named oct. 4th in honor of Lcpl. Josh Mcdaniels. shame on London politics.

    • R

Brent, your hurt clearly shows through this message, however I do not feel that it is fair to say “ingrates” I was standing in the pouring rain that afternoon along with thousands of other London “ingrates” to honor your son. I live near your home here in London, and remember seeing Josh playing basketball with friends. I did not know how, however felt it was my duty to pay tribute to his family as well has him to pay my respects. It was an emotional day, one that you will surely never forget.
When I first saw the FB message about te possibiliy of the post office name change-my first reaction was -what an honor. But then, I then I sat back, and thought about what all of the other folks have brought up. What would Josh have wanted? How could we as a community honor him? maybe in naming a sports complex or sport event after him….. was he passionate about the “post office? I think to honor him, would to find something that he loved and invest the time and energy in honoring him that way….just a suggestion. Hoping you find peace.

  13. Mike

By the way the post office is a federal establishment not a city or state entity and it would take Federal authority to rename it.

    • Mike

sorry I hit post before I was finished. This means that every family that requests a name change would have to be shown the same respect and have their post office renamed in Honor of their fallen Son or daughter.

  14. Gary

No their has been others that have fallen before Josh, and nothing was renamed for them….Unless they could come up with a name that would honor all of them, just leave it alone…..
