Victories scarce for area teams

Wednesday was not a great day for most area baseball and softball teams, although there was some positive news to report.
Baseball
Hillsboro 5, London 4
HILLSBORO — The London baseball team will have to wait until Monday to clinch its first-ever South Central Ohio League title.
Kyle Spencer pitched well Wednesday night, not allowing an earned run.
Spencer and Jake Burns each had two hits.
Clinton-Massie 2, Madison-Plains 1
WILMINGTON — The Madison-Plains baseball team lost a South Central Ohio League road game on Wednesday.
Jonathan Alder 12, Watterson 9
COLUMBUS — The Jonathan Alder baseball team improved to 14-3 on the year with a victory over host Bishop Watterson on Wednesday.
West Jefferson 19, Harvest Prep 9
COLUMBUS — The West Jefferson baseball team had little trouble with host Harvest Prep in Mid-State League/Cardinal Division play on Wednesday.
Softball
Clinton-Massie 2, Madison-Plains 0
WILMINGTON — The Madison-Plains softball team lost a SCOL road game on Wednesday.
Hillsboro 6, London 4
HILLSBORO — The London softball team fell just short Wednesday, falling to host Hillsboro in South Central Ohio League action.
“We hit the ball hard. They were just at people,” Red Riders coach Kelly Nelson said.
Shannon Merkle and Aliyah Hiram both tripled for London.
West Jefferson 20, Harvest Prep 2
The West Jefferson softball team stayed in the Mid-State League/Cardinal Division hunt with a road victory on Wednesday.
The Roughriders (17-4) pounded out 25 hits, including an inside-the-park home run from Coren Braithwaite.
