Ohio girl in Park City snow tubing accident dies

PARK CITY (AP) — One of two Ohio girls critically injured after hitting a tree while tubing at popular Park City ski resort has died.

University Hospital spokeswoman Vickie King says 16-year-old Jessica Frankel of Shaker Heights died about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. King said 17-year-old Janette Oliva has been upgraded to fair condition at the Salt Lake City hospital.

Authorities say the teens were riding the same inner tube down a beginner slope after the resort had closed Monday night but lost control and crashed.

They were part of a group of six teens and young adults tubing at Deer Valley Resort. It is a ski-only resort and tubing is prohibited.

The Cleveland-area school the girls attended issued a statement Thursday calling it a tragic accident. Officials say grief counselors are available as needed.
