A journey in color
Yesterday was a color day. I took a dash of this, a pinch of that, mixed it with a lot of white and applied it to no less than five canvases. Three of which will be removed from my studio because they are finished. The other two are waiting for my next spurt of color energy. I was happy with yesterday’s progress. I was able to cover up the big mess I did last week and turn it around into something completely different. It was part experiment and part play. The colors were not normally mine, yet, they seemed fresh and vibrant and expressed a very lighter mood than I had painted in the past.
I don’t know if I am moving into a different style because of a change of thought pattern or the other way around. All I know is that I like what is happening no matter the reason. My painting has become more playful therefore more enjoyable to do.
It was very hard to break out of my mood as an illustrator and to free myself from a myriad of painting details. After that break, I went into a freer style which was intended to break me away from the tight paintings I had done for over 40 years. Now I feel that I am moving into another stage, one that is enjoying color and playful brushstrokes. I am not trying to accomplish anything. I’m just following my impulses letting my brush move over the canvas and touching down where it will. As I look at my palette I am using more white than I ever did before, therefore, my paintings are lighter in color. It could be that my very nature is getting lighter inside the inside.
I am not sure of where I am headed but it looks like a new direction caused by the paint or the person or a combination of both. The truth is, it matters not, it is a journey and I have not been on one for some time.
